The primary function of the Logistics Planner is the responsibility for the operations component of planned TMW orders from the Logistics Engineering group. This will be accomplished by the driver and asset assignment process and will result in maximizing SCMs revenue and minimizing empty miles for a defined region. The Planner will identify opportunities to provide transportation solutions to address internal and external customer needs while consistently meeting or exceeding gross margin and service targets. The position requires professional communications, computer and presentation skills. Position represents the company in a positive image with employees, customers and the community always performing in a safe and ethical manner.


  • Executes the necessary plan to attain the regional planning gross margin targets and communicate service short falls to Logistics Engineering Manager.
  • Works toward attaining operational standards for cost control, waste reduction, quality, safety and service accountability.
  • Achieve the targets for KPIs for key network decisions (i.e. deadhead, dwell, repower, service, layover and lane balance).
  • Works with Logistics Engineering and Operations to execute network optimization plans to eliminate long-term and short-term imbalances and ensure customer service commitments are met.
  • Maintains a thorough understanding of the trailer and tractor inventory (in motion and spotted) in their region.
  • Demonstrates an expert knowledge of the processes and procedures required to execute their assigned tasks for their role in their area in an efficient manner.
  • Maintains adept knowledge of the trucking industry, HOS, DOT, C-TPAT regulations for Driver/non-driver policies and procedures.
  • Generates freight revenue by analyzing the network for opportunities and potential for filler freight and securing additional freight to maximize utilization, revenue and gross margin.

  • Builds relationships with freight brokers and customers, while growing our base of third party freight providers.
  • Responsible for scheduling broker freight appointment times and communicating schedule deviations to all stakeholders.
  • Negotiates backhaul rates as well as securing additional backhaul freight, adhering to parameters set by the Operations Controller.
  • Monitor and track loads, where appropriate.

  • Meets or exceeds all Gross Margin Targets on a per region basis.

    • Achieves daily KPI results to ensure Gross Margin targets.
    • Responsible to assign all freight in the region during their shift including any additional freight and expedite orders (EO)s to maximize cube and asset efficiency.
    • Communicates short falls, opportunities, and action plans to Logistics Engineering Manager and Director of SCM Transportation through the continuous improvement process once per week.

  • Ability to analyze and evaluate financial and operational information to identify issues and barriers for corrective action, through utilization of:

    • Daily/weekly management reports and dashboards.
    • Daily load Plan.
    • Visual communications board.
    • Communicate with Logistics Engineering and Operations when needed to interject additional freight to balance regions assets.

  • Makes analytical decisions about key network factors such as deadhead, dwell, repower, service, layover and market balance.

    Planner must be capable of:

    • Analyzing network lane balances through asset load balance data and the TMW system.

    • Execute the planning process to meet and exceed the targets for:
      deadhead, dwell, repower, service, layover and market balance.
    • Monitor new driver capacity for shortfall variance and forecast needs to Logistics Engineering Manager.

  • Coordinates with Logistics Engineering and Operations to ensure Gross Margin targets, trailer cube, asset utilization and customer service commitments are met.

    • Assigns driver and assets to meet Logistics Load Plans that ensure all service commitments are met.
    • Monitors PTAs and making adjustments to plans based upon freight requirements.
    • Prioritizes freight when routing deviations negatively affect profitability.
    • Works with Logistics Engineering to maximize available truck capacity based on appointment times and dwell on loads.

  • Understands all Company Gross Margin Targets, while being able to refine and implement action plans to meet those targets:

    • Evaluates current and prospective KPI results.
    • Reports weekly management statistics to Logistics Engineering Manager for continuous Improvement with action plans assigned to address variance.
    • Analyze and communicate network utilization strategies to Logistics Engineering Manager and Director of SCM Transportation.

  • Attends daily huddle and shift change meetings to update Logistics Engineering and Operations.

Qualified candidates will have an Associates or a Bachelors degree in business, logistics, or a related field preferred and/or a minimum of five years in a dispatch or load planning position.


Candidates must be able to demonstrate both strong written and verbal communication skills. In addition, candidates must demonstrate a proficiency in most Microsoft Office programs such as Word, Outlook and Excel. Additional knowledge of Federal Motor Carrier Safety regulations and current logistics software such as PC Miler, TMW, and/or Peoplenet is preferred, but not required. Experience building strong relationships with carriers. Ability to analyze, plan, strategize, negotiate and execute backhaul systems in a complex transportation network.


Must be able to communicate clearly and effectively through multiple formats included e-mail, phone calls, and fax notifications. The ability to read and interpret documents such as safety rules and regulations, operation manuals, maintenance instructions and procedural manuals is preferred, but not required. All candidates will need to be able to solve practical problems where limited standardization exists. Candidates will need to be able to interpret a variety of instructions form multiple formats, including written, verbal, diagram and schedules.


Qualified candidates will be able to add, subtract, multiply, and divide in all units of measure, using whole numbers, common fractions, and decimals as well as be able to compute rate, ratio, and percent. Candidates should also be able to create and interpret bar graphs.
